A swollen eye can be the outcome of a fight with another fish or your fish could have scraped its eye against an abrasive object in the tank. In most injuries the protruding eye will eventually recede as it heals. Both eyes seem to pop out on one or more fish.

If this happens look for damage to the eye a dead giveaway that exophthalmia is the result of an injury.

Keep an eye on your fish and just see if it becomes white around the eye glazed over with fuzz and if this happens this means that your fish does in fact have pop-eye and it is advised that you run to the pet store to get either liquid or powder treatment.
