Oscar fish only using one gill

Over the last few days I ve noticed that sometimes my tiger oscar breathes from one side only. I found a few things around the web that say this may be normal that they can chose to do this and others saying he is likely deathly ill. They also switch back and forth between the left and right side.

I have seen some oscars in relaxed states only breathing out of one gill before with no damage. They usually resume normal breathing. Add only one or at most two fish at a time to the tank as their biological filters take time to respond to the new changes and members of the tank.

It may be just lazy and because its not moving around much it only needs to use one. If its been there doing it for a good while
