Oscars do indeed dig. Sand would be nicer on their mouths since they do like to excavate. The big debate between substrates is sand vs gravel.

I kept my big guy on both gravel and sand at one time or another.

I always suck up a little sand when i vacuum but i just pour the water through a towel and put the sand back in the tank. You can always get bottom feeders and shrimp to keep your sand clean as well.
