The perfect temperature for Oscar Fish is between 75 and 80 degrees Fahranheit 23 27 Celcius and they prefer a pH balance of between 6 and 8. Most aquatic animals including oscar fish produce ammonia as a waste product- which is highly toxic in its unionized form. High pH levels force ammonia to remain in its unionized form which in turn increases its toxicity.

Oscar fish Just like the water changes oscars are very sensitive to ammonia levels too. Until levels of ammonia get quite high the fish may not show any signs at all. The ph of your water may also determine how toxic the ammonia is. The ph level below 7.0 will greatly reduce the toxicity of ammonia. Alternatively an alkaline ph can make ammonia more toxic. This is why having a low ph is always beneficial. Oscars have been known to grow up to 16 40cm and over 3 pounds 1.5kg - but usually 12 is their maximum size. Oscars in a 4ft aquarium will usually grow no larger than 8 . Ph 7.0 hardness 12.0. Keep your ph between about 6 and 8. Oscars will tolerate a range of conditions usually tap water will suffice.
They will adapt to ph as high as 8.0 and can still breed and be happy. My local waters around 8.0 - 8.2 and many people breed oscars locally without messing with the ph. Main thing is ask the store or person your getting it from what their ph and try and make sure its close. If not them acclimate him very slowly to your tank so you don t shock him. It takes 20 minutes of time and then you can add your fish in a water tank by acclimating your fish to ph level of water tank. Ammonia and nitrites levels due to the waste released from oscar fish ammonia and nitrites cannot be at zero level as waste contribute nitrates and hence water tank needs some filtration system to set zero levels. But if you want to alter your tank to the official ph levels for your fish do it slowly. Any rapid change can hurt your fish. A rapid change is measured by 0.2 within 24 hours. Check the ph level of where you are getting your water. Make sure it is close to the current level of your tank.
There is no normal ph that applies to all fish. Because fish originate in ponds rivers streams lakes and oceans that have different ph levels the optimum ph levels for fish varies by species. Saltwater fish prefer a basic ph of 8.0 or above. African cichlids often come from lakes that have a ph value above 8.0. The two oscars i have were my beginner fish aka the second and third fish that i have ever put in a tank. I have an albino and tiger oscar that are both maybe 10 inches both two years of age. When got the first oscar i kept it in a one gallon due to how small it was but then put it in a 5 10 gallon tank when it was two inches big. The lower more acid the ph level is the more significant the quantity of ionic ammonium nh4 and the less toxic gaseous ammonia nh3 is in the water column solution. In this case unless the concentration of ammonia is abnormally high the fish are actually unaffected.
