The two oscars I have were my beginner fish aka the second and third fish that I have ever put in a tank. When got the first oscar I kept it in a one gallon due to how small it was but then put it in a 5 10 gallon tank when it was two inches big. Here is everything you need to know to start raising Oscars in your home aquarium including their tank conditions their preferred diet and all the information you need to breed them successfully.
Oscar fish The oscar fish is one of the most intriguing tropical freshwater fish in the entire hobby. Typically what happens when you just have two oscars is that one of them becomes the dominant fish and bullies the other. That means that the bullied fish only gets to eat what the other misses and is picked on constantly. If it survives it is usually stunted and never reaches its full growth potential. You can have as many oscars as you want in a tank but if you want two you need a 100galon tank or larger. Usualy i would say an inch of fish for evory gallon of aquarium water but with fish as big as oscars you need a tank big enough so the fish doesn t half to bend it s body to tern around. So basicly it needs to be twice as long as the oscars body wich is 14 to 16inches long .
Baby oscars need at least 30 gallons of water per fish. However a 75-gallon tank would be ideal for a single adult oscar fish. A commonly preferred minimum tank size among the oscar-loving community is a 55-gallon tank. But experienced aquarists and pet shop owners suggest that a 75-gallon fish tank is ideal for an adult oscar. Oscar fish tank size in gallons varies as per their size but in the general case it is minimum 55 gallons for a single fish which is typically about 10 inches in length in captivity. In perfect cases best size should be 75-gallon for one adult oscar fish. Capacity increases with increase in number of oscar fish to be kept.
If you ve only got the one adult oscar in a 55-gallon aquarium then i don t think there s any need to go over the top a filter rated for a 100-gallon aquarium would work just great. When i had my 125-gallon aquarium i have a couple of eheim 2028 canister filters installed both of which are rated up to 132 gallons.
