An Oscar fish will quite easily reach 12 inches in as little as 18 months. However if you want to give your fish the best chance in life give it a healthy environment to live in then it is absolutely paramount that it starts its life off in the correct sized aquarium. The water capacity required will also vary depending on the number of Oscars you plan on keeping.

Oscars grow quite large and need lots of room swim around. When i had a tiger oscar he lived in a 55 gallon aquarium and that was pushing it. My tiger oscar grew 11 inches long. Oscar fish tank size in gallons varies as per their size but in the general case it is minimum 55 gallons for a single fish which is typically about 10 inches in length in captivity. In perfect cases best size should be 75-gallon for one adult oscar fish. Capacity increases with increase in number of oscar fish to be kept. Oscar has a strong oval shaped body with bid head and thick large lips. In the wild max size can be about 45 cm 18 in but in a tank the fish is smaller about 20-25 cm 10-12 in . Your oscar aquarium should provide at least 30 gallons of space about 114 liters per oscar plus any space needed for any other fish.
A minimum fish tank size of 40 gallons about 152 liters is recommended if you are keeping an oscar. Oscars are very messy fish so fish tank maintenance is paramount. The tank will only look empty for the first 6 months once the oscar grows a bit the tank will quickly fill up even if it s only one fish most large ciclids are hard on plants. Some of the smaller ones will leave them alone or even prefer a planted tank. Tank 75 gallons is the best minimum size for an oscar because of how large they grow and how messy they are. You can squeeze them into 50 but bigger is much better. Provide hiding spots for the young oscar. He won t need them for long but he ll appreciate them at first.
