It could be a really complex issue like water quality like Rohan is suggesting and please answer all of Rohan s questions. The first time you see your oscar do this you might be inclined to panic. But don t panic 9 10 times it isn t anything serious at all.

But on top of that oscars can just be lazy fish and sometimes they sit and lay on the bottom.

Oscar fish Because after all it s usually a bad sign to see a midwater aquarium fish laying almost motionless on the bottom of the tank. So why do oscars lay on their sides My oscar is laying on the bottom of the tank and not moving. He is in a 55 gallon tank with no other fish. The ammonia nitrite are 0 and nitrate is about 15. He has been on the bottom of the tank for 2 days now. Before that he was acting lethargic and sitting on the bottom a lot of the time for about 6 days. None of those fish can be kept alive for long in a 10-gallon tank.

That is the root of your problems. An oscar or a pleco needs at least a 75-gallon tank for one fish and the algae eater if it s a chinese algae eater needs at least a 55-gallon tank. Right now though i suspect the ammonia in the tank has built up to toxic levels. I have two oscar fish one is about 2 inches long and the other is about 3 inches long they both seem to want to just sit at the bottom of the tank and not move around at all. I think there might be a reason for this but im not sure today i fed them three one inch goldfish so i was wondering if they would just be full from a bloated belly causing them to want to rest if this is the case im You look in your tank and think something s just not right with my fish it just lays around. It s true most goldfish if they are healthy will be swimming all over the place. So sitting at the bottom of the tank or in the corner lethargically is usually an indication that your fish isn t feeling well. But good news not always.

It seems to specifically dislike things being shifted in the tank. Other than that changing the water in the tank or a sudden change in the temperature of the water also doesn t go down too well with an oscar fish. However it isn t that it would sit sulking on such changes for days or weeks.
